Working exam problems under time pressure: pacing, flagging and when to guess

Most FS candidates lose marks to the clock rather than to ignorance. A pacing method, a flagging discipline, and the arithmetic of guessing.

Ask candidates who narrowly failed the Fundamentals of Surveying exam what went wrong and the answer is rarely a topic. It is that they spent eleven minutes on a question worth exactly as much as the one they never reached. Time management is a skill the exam tests as surely as trigonometry, and unlike trigonometry most candidates never practise it deliberately.

The good news is that pacing is the easiest thing in your preparation to improve, because it requires no new knowledge. It requires a rule, decided in advance, and enough rehearsal that you follow the rule when you are tired and behind.

Work out your own numbers first

Take the current exam specification from the exam provider, find the number of questions and the working time, and divide. That gives your average seconds per question, and every pacing decision follows from it.

average time per question = working time ÷ number of questions
As an illustration only: 300 minutes of working time across 100 questions gives 3.0 minutes per question. Substitute the current published figures for your own exam; do not plan from this example.

Then convert that average into checkpoints you can actually use, because nobody tracks an average in their head under pressure. In the illustration above, 90 minutes in you should be around question 30, and halfway through the time you should be around question 50. Write your equivalent checkpoints down and memorise three of them.

The two-pass method

The single most effective tactic in a computer-based multiple-choice exam is to refuse to work in order. The interface lets you skip, flag and return, and the whole strategy rests on using it.

  1. First pass: go through every question in order, but answer only those you can finish within roughly the average time. Answer conceptual questions immediately; they are the cheapest marks on the exam.
  2. Flag anything that will clearly take longer, and flag anything you answered but felt uncertain about. Use two mental categories: not attempted, and attempted but doubtful.
  3. Never leave a flagged question blank. Put down your best guess before moving on, so that if you never return you still hold the guess's chance rather than nothing.
  4. Second pass: return to the not-attempted flags first, since those hold the most available marks per minute.
  5. Third pass, if time remains: revisit the attempted-but-doubtful flags. Change an answer only if you find a definite error, not because it now feels wrong.
  6. Final minutes: confirm nothing is unanswered. This is the last and easiest check, and it is worth reserving two minutes for.

The reason the first pass works is that question difficulty is unpredictable and unordered. A question you can answer in forty seconds may sit immediately after one that would take you eight minutes, and working in strict order means the eight-minute question can cost you the forty-second one.

When to abandon a question

Set a hard limit before you sit down: roughly twice the average time. If you reach it without a clear path to an answer, guess, flag and move. This rule has to be decided in advance because in the moment it feels wrong — you have invested four minutes and abandoning feels like wasting them.

It is not wasting them. Those minutes are spent whatever you do next, and the only question remaining is what the next minutes buy. Another four on a question you are stuck on buys a chance at one mark; four spent on two fresh questions buys a good chance at two.

The arithmetic of guessing

On a multiple-choice exam without a penalty for wrong answers, a guess is strictly better than a blank. With four options, a blind guess is worth about 0.25 of a mark, which is 0.25 more than leaving it empty. Eliminating one option raises that to about 0.33; eliminating two raises it to 0.5. There is never a situation in which not answering is correct.

Guessing well is a skill, and in a technical exam it is mostly about eliminating options on physical grounds rather than intuiting the answer.

  • Check units and magnitude. An answer expressed in the wrong unit, or off by a power of ten, can often be eliminated without doing the problem.
  • Check sign and direction. A distance cannot be negative; a bearing cannot exceed 90°; an azimuth outside 0° to 360° has not been reduced.
  • Look for the deliberate distractor. Exam writers commonly include the value you would get from a specific likely mistake, such as using a tangent length where an arc length belongs. Recognising the trap tells you which option is the trap.
  • Estimate roughly. A quick order-of-magnitude check often leaves only one plausible option, and takes ten seconds.
  • Prefer the option consistent with a physical sketch. Many geometry questions can be resolved approximately by drawing them roughly to scale.

Managing the second half

Performance in a long appointment degrades, and it degrades in a predictable way: reading gets less careful, arithmetic slips increase, and the temptation to persist on a stuck question grows precisely as its value falls. Anticipating this is most of the remedy.

Use the scheduled break properly — stand up, drink water, look at something more than two feet away. Resist reviewing anything during it. In the final stretch, slow your reading rather than speeding it, because the errors that come with fatigue are misreadings rather than miscalculations, and rereading the question costs five seconds while answering the wrong question costs the mark.

Above all, rehearse this. A pacing rule you have used in two full-length practice sessions is a rule you will follow. A pacing rule you read about once is a rule you will abandon at the first hard question.

Is there a penalty for a wrong answer?

Multiple-choice items of this kind are scored on correct answers, so an incorrect answer costs nothing that a blank would not. Confirm the current scoring policy with the exam provider, but the practical conclusion is unchanged: never leave a question unanswered.

Should I change an answer on review?

Change it if you find a definite error in your working or realise you misread the question. Do not change it because it now feels wrong. Second-guessing without new information is as likely to hurt as to help, and it consumes time better spent on unattempted questions.

What if I am badly behind at the halfway checkpoint?

Switch to strict triage: read each remaining question, answer it if you can see the route within about thirty seconds, otherwise guess and flag. Being behind is recoverable; discovering with fifteen minutes left that twenty questions are blank is much less so.

How do I practise pacing without full-length sessions?

Work in timed blocks — twenty questions with a clock set to twenty times your average — and review your per-question times afterwards. Blocks build the habit; you still want at least one full-length session for endurance, which blocks cannot supply.
