Building a study plan: an eight-week schedule for the FS exam

A concrete eight-week schedule for the FS exam, built around diagnosis, targeted study, timed practice and a deliberate taper before the appointment.

Eight weeks of consistent part-time study is a realistic and common preparation period for the Fundamentals of Surveying exam for a candidate with a relevant degree or solid recent experience. It is long enough to fix real gaps and short enough that the material stays fresh, which is the failure mode of a six-month plan.

The schedule below assumes roughly 10 hours a week, or about 80 hours in total: two hours on four weekday evenings plus a longer weekend session. Adjust the total to your own diagnosis rather than to this number. What matters is not the hours but the structure, which moves deliberately from diagnosis to targeted study to timed practice.

The principles the schedule is built on

  1. Book the exam first. A plan without a date is an intention. Counting backwards from a confirmed appointment is what makes a schedule real.
  2. Diagnose before you study. Deciding what to work on by intuition over-weights whatever you already enjoy.
  3. Practise retrieving, not re-reading. Working problems from a blank page builds the ability the exam tests; re-reading notes builds familiarity, which feels like learning and is not.
  4. Introduce the clock early. Speed is a separate skill from correctness, and it takes weeks to develop. Adding it in the final week is too late.
  5. Review errors more carefully than you work new problems. A problem you got wrong and fully understood is worth several you got right.
  6. Taper. The last few days are for consolidation and rest, not for new material.

Weeks one and two: diagnose and rebuild the mathematics

Start by obtaining the current exam specification from the exam provider and reading it end to end. Then work a broad, untimed set of practice problems spanning every area in it, and log each failure by cause: knowledge gap, computation slip, misread question, or too slow. That log is the plan.

Spend the remainder of these two weeks on mathematics, because it underpins everything else and because weakness here slows every subsequent topic. Trigonometry, coordinate geometry, degrees-minutes-seconds handling and the basic statistics of observations are the priorities. Do this work on the calculator you will take to the exam, so that fluency with the machine develops alongside fluency with the mathematics.

Weeks three to five: work the weak areas

These three weeks are the substance of the plan. Take your ranked list of weak areas and work through them one at a time, spending roughly a week on each of the top three, with a session in each week reserved for mixed review of everything covered so far.

Work each topic by solving problems rather than by reading about it. Read only to resolve something a problem exposed. The proportion should be something like three-quarters problems to one-quarter reading, and if it drifts the other way the study has quietly turned into revision.

Keep a single sheet, physical or digital, of the relationships you keep having to look up. By week five that sheet is your personal weak-spot summary, and rewriting it from memory once a week is one of the highest-return twenty minutes in the whole plan.

Weeks six and seven: timed practice under exam conditions

Now the clock goes on. The purpose of these two weeks is to convert knowledge into performance, and the two are genuinely different. Candidates routinely discover in week six that they can solve almost everything and finish almost nothing.

  • Sit at least one, preferably two, full-length practice sessions in a single sitting, at the time of day your appointment falls. Endurance is a real variable and it is trainable.
  • Practise with the official reference material from the exam provider, in its searchable form, so your search behavior develops rather than your memory of a printed page.
  • Practise the flagging strategy deliberately: fast first pass, flag anything that will take more than the average time, return afterwards.
  • Log your pace at checkpoints during each session, so you learn what being behind feels like before it happens for real.
  • Review every session in full the following day, not the same evening. Same-day review after a long session is low quality.
  • Work new problems as well, since practice sessions alone narrow your exposure to the areas those sessions happen to cover.

As a rough calibration: if a hypothetical session offered 300 minutes of working time for 100 questions, the average is 3.0 minutes per question, and after 90 minutes you should be somewhere around question 30. Compute the equivalent figures from the current specification and know your own checkpoints before the day.

Week eight: consolidate and taper

No new material. The last week is for reinforcing what is already there and arriving rested. Rework the problems you got wrong in weeks six and seven, rewrite your weak-spot sheet from memory, and do short daily sessions rather than long ones.

  1. Days one to three: rework logged errors, especially any that recur. A repeated error is a systematic misunderstanding, not bad luck.
  2. Day four: a final shorter timed session, then stop analysing performance. At this point the number tells you nothing you can act on.
  3. Day five: logistics. Confirm the appointment, the center location, the travel time, the identification requirements and the permitted items. Verify your calculator is on the current approved list and put fresh batteries in it.
  4. Day six: light review of the weak-spot sheet only, an hour at most, then stop. Sleep matters more than anything you could learn now.
  5. Exam day: eat properly, arrive early, and accept that some questions will be unfamiliar. That is normal and does not mean the session is going badly.

Adapting it to your situation

A final-year student should compress weeks one and two, since the mathematics is current, and spend the recovered time on boundary principles and professional topics that the degree may have covered late or lightly. An experienced field surveyor should do the opposite, treating the mathematics rebuild as the core of the plan and being honest that fifteen years of competent practice is not preparation for a breadth examination.

Whatever your starting point, protect the timed practice. It is the phase most often sacrificed when the schedule slips, and it is the phase that most reliably predicts the outcome.

Questions

Is eighty hours enough?

For a candidate with a recent relevant degree, usually. For someone years removed from the mathematics, often not — plan on more, and spend the additional time in the first phase rebuilding fundamentals rather than adding topics at the end.

Should I take a review course?

A structured course helps candidates who struggle to self-direct, and adds little for those who already study systematically. Whichever you choose, the active ingredient is working problems under a clock, so judge any course by how much of that it makes you do.

How many practice problems should I work?

Enough that the routine ones are automatic, which for most candidates means several hundred across the whole specification. The count matters less than the review: problems worked and not reviewed teach very little.

What if I fall behind the schedule?

Cut topic study, not timed practice. Falling behind usually means the middle block ran long, and the instinct is to protect it by squeezing the practice weeks. That is the wrong trade; performance under time is what the exam measures.
