Passing the Fundamentals of Surveying exam clears the first examination hurdle on the path to licensure. What follows is a period of progressive professional experience under supervision, and then the professional-level examination, the Principles and Practice of Surveying.
One qualification governs everything on this page. Licensure is administered by individual state boards, and the requirements vary substantially between jurisdictions: how much experience is required, what kinds of experience count, who may supervise it, how it is documented, and whether additional state-specific examinations are required. Nothing here is a statement of any jurisdiction's rules. Obtain the current requirements from the board where you intend to be licensed, and do it now rather than four years from now.
The general structure
- Education. Boards set the qualifying education, which in most jurisdictions is a degree in surveying or geomatics, sometimes with alternative routes combining other education and additional experience.
- Fundamentals examination. Commonly taken near graduation, and in many jurisdictions permitted before it.
- Registration as an intern or surveyor-in-training, which most boards offer after the fundamentals examination and which formally starts the experience clock.
- Progressive professional experience under the supervision of a licensed surveyor, documented as it happens.
- Application to sit the professional examination, which the board reviews against its own requirements.
- The professional examination, plus any state-specific examination the board requires on local law and practice.
- Licensure, followed by continuing education requirements that vary by jurisdiction.
What experience is meant to do
The word boards use is progressive, and the emphasis matters. The intent is not that you spend a set number of years employed in surveying; it is that your responsibility grows over that period, from executing tasks that someone else planned toward planning the work, exercising judgment, and taking responsibility for outcomes.
This shapes how you should choose work during those years. Experience that stays at one level, however long it lasts, prepares you poorly for both the professional examination and the practice that follows. Time doing varied work with increasing responsibility prepares you well.
- Seek breadth. Boundary retracement, construction, control, topographic work, platting and record research each exercise different judgment, and the professional examination is written on the assumption you have met all of them.
- Seek the analytical side, not only the field side. Deed research, evidence evaluation and the reasoning behind a boundary determination are where professional judgment actually lives, and they are the hardest experience to obtain if nobody deliberately gives it to you.
- Find a supervisor who will teach. Working near a licensed surveyor is not the same as being mentored by one, and the difference compounds over years.
- Ask to see the reasoning. When a boundary opinion is formed, ask why the surveyor held one monument over another. That conversation is worth more than a month of field production.
- Take on responsibility as it is offered, including the parts that are uncomfortable, because discomfort is a reasonable proxy for the growth boards mean by progressive.
How the professional examination differs
The professional-level examination tests professional practice rather than fundamentals. In broad character, it moves the emphasis from whether you can compute toward whether you can decide.

Consult the exam provider's current specification for the professional examination for its actual scope and format, in the same way you did for the fundamentals examination. The two specifications are separate documents and both are revised.
The years in between
The gap between the two examinations is where most candidates lose ground, and the reason is straightforward: the fundamentals are perishable. Geodetic theory, error analysis and computation you do not use will fade, and the professional examination still assumes them.
- Keep a small amount of technical reading going through the experience years. An hour a month is enough to stop the fundamentals decaying.
- Keep your notes. The weak-spot sheet from your fundamentals preparation is a useful starting point years later.
- Get involved in a professional society. Meetings, conferences and local chapters expose you to practice areas your employer does not touch, which is exactly the breadth the professional examination expects.
- Read the public domain literature, particularly the federal manuals on public land survey principles. That material underpins a substantial share of professional-level boundary content.
- Track your board's requirements as they change over the years between exams. Rules are amended, and the requirements that apply are the ones current when you apply.
- Apply as soon as you are eligible. Applications take time to review, and eligibility is not the same as approval.
Finally, treat the intervening years as the substance of your professional formation rather than as a waiting period. The examination at the end is a check on what you learned during them, not a separate hurdle you could have jumped without them.
